2020-21 Unit Plan
Occupational & Life Skills

Mission Statement

This program is designed to provide quality education and vocational training for students at the basic skills levels in the areas of workforce preparation, job enrichment, and career retainment.

Program Description

The focus of the Occupational and Life Skills (OLS) Certificate Program is to prepare students for community integrated employment. Two separate certifications may be obtained through an occupation specific certification and a Butte College Certificate of Completion. Students who complete the program will have proof of competencies through these certifications to present to potential employers. This certificate program requires successful completion of 6 courses in the OLS 324-329 sequence.
In Fall 2020, the OLS Program will include two new classes for incarcerated students: OLS 340 and 341. These courses are interpersonal skills training courses and are in the process of becoming another certificate program.

Student Learning/Administrative Unit Outcomes

In Fall 2019, there were two OLS classes offered, one was dual enrollment and the other was OLS 324 at the Chico Center. Students in the dual enrollment class did fine on the objectives, but many students enrolled at the Chico Center did not have the skill levels to complete the course successfully. For this reason a set of criteria were developed to ensure success for students attending the class. In addiion, the OLS 323 class was offered at the same time as OLS 326 at the Chico Center for Spring 2020. With the establishment of criteria and offering OLS 323, students will have more success and better preparation for future OLS classes.

Strategic Direction

The Special Programs Department offers the following OLS certificate programs:

A. Occupational and Life Skills (OLS) Certificate of Completion which is offered at Orland

High School, the Chico Center, and the Glenn Center. This program provides a direct

pathway to entry level positions such as food service, hospitality, retail sales, customer

service, and nursery and greenhouse operations.

B. Occupational and Life Skills  340/341 Certificate of Completion provides interpersonal

training for incarcerated students who are in the workforce or intend to join the

      workforce (Fall 2020).

The OLS Certificate Programs  prepare adults with disabilities, incarcerated students, English Language Learners, and those at the basic skills levels for entry level positions in the workforce.

Department Goals

  1. Create a separate budget for the Occupational and Life Skills Program

        2. Collaborate with the English as a Second Language Department to offer Occupational

and Life Skills couses to English Language Learners.

Future Development Strategies

Strategy 1 - Create a separate budget for the Occupational and Life Skills Program

Create a budget for ongoing purchase of $5,000 for hands-on learning kits with curriculum that will provide a certification at the end of the learning module for the eight areas listed in OLS 329, in addition to other operating costs and supplies.

Initiatives
  • Modeling Sustainability
  • Enhancing a Culture of Completion and Goal Achievement
  • Supporting Student, Faculty and Staff Success
  • Using Data-Informed Processes for Continuous Improvement
  • Maximizing Resources to Support Student Learning
  • Enhancing a Culture of Equity and Inclusiveness

Supporting Rationale

Most of the OLS Programs are operating off of the CPE Instructional Service Agreement contract budget. The OLS  350-355 training series courses are the only OLS courses instructed by Instructional Service Agreement Instructors.

The OLS Program should have a separate budget for audit purposes. Any courses not deemed as Instructional Service Agreement courses should not have operating expenses funded by Instructional Service Agreement contract budgets approved only for delivery of Instructional Service Agreement contract services.
