CalWORKs

Mission Statement

The Butte College CalWORKs Program helps eligible CalWORKs students:

* Work on employment readiness skills (i.e. complete a master application, create a cover letter, resume, references, "thank you" letter, interview preparation, and learn job search skills)
* Learn resources and tools needed to become more self-sufficient
* Advocate for a successful student experience (e.g., exemption from 7 days to pay, priority registration, needs assessment and confer with county CalWORKs Case Managers) 
* Collaborate with the counties (Butte, Glenn and others)

Program Description

The following services are offered through the CalWORKs Program: 

* Collaborate with the County Department of Employment and Social Service Agencies to assist students with priority registration and support of services
* Work with the College's Business Office regarding CalWORKs county billing 
* Provide case management services to support students in college
* Receive referrals from County for participation in the Job Skills Workshop (JSW)
* Receive referrals from the County for participation in CalWORKs Work-Study (ButteWORKs)  

(note the JSW is open to all community members)

Student Learning/Administrative Unit Outcomes

The SLO's are linked with CLP334 classes and assessed after each session is completed.  

The results for that session are linked to grade sheets to illustrate student learning.

Strategic Direction

Enhancing a Culture of Completion and Academic Achievement 

  • Collaborate with county partners to provide updated Butte College information for students (clients) to transition to college; 
  • Learn about academic programs to share with students as part of career/educational planning;
  • Students aware of resources, actively meet with College CalWORKs representatives, and utilize their academic services are more likely to remain in school and complete a degree and/or transfer requirements and
  • Ensure eligible CalWORKs students have access to resources to them online, by phone, and at the Glenn Center, Chico Center and Skyway Center.
Supporting Student, Faculty and Staff Training  
  • Update online resources on the CalWORKs webpage, as well as the Career Counseling and Job Placement webpages;
  • Presentations, as needed, to groups and classes;
  • Participation on governance and other campus/community committees, as applicable and
  • Participation on county case management meetings.

Using Data-Informed Processes for Continuous Improvement 

  • Collaborate with county CalWORKs programs as a pathway for CalWORKs students who want to attend college (college=sustainable employment);
  • Analyze SLO's to adjust teaching strategies and
  • Work with students to gather feedback in approving delivery of instructional concepts.

Maximizing Resources to Support Student Learning 

  • ButteWORKs Program for eligible CalWORKs students through paid employment while attending school.  Employment assists students to remain in school.   Academic success helps students remain in school, complete courses, get degrees/certificates and transfer/or obtain sustainable employment;

  • Addition of updated resources (marketing, webpage) as a tool for student success (course completion) and

  • Collaborate with specialized groups to determine feasibility or appropriateness of expanding workshops.

Modeling Sustainability 

  • Educate students, faculty and staff about CalWORKs, as well as advocate for services to assist with education.

Enhancing a Culture of Inclusiveness 

  • Access to CalWORKs resources (including appointments) at the main campus, Glenn County, Chico and Skyway Center.  Online/phone appointments are also available.
  • Inform CalWORKs community about Guided Pathways (transition to school, completion of classes, obtaining degrees to lead to transfer or employment resulting in success and getting off cash assistance).

 


Program Review

CalWORKs no longer has a stand-alone Program Review and is linked with Career Counseling and Job Placement.


Department Goals

The goal of the CalWORKs Program is to provide our students with job readiness skills in order to successfully compete in the current job market.  We support CalWORKs students who attend classes to complete a certificate or degree in preparation for transfer and/or work.
